Introduction

Untitled document

Males are called Hobs and Females are called Jills.

A group of ferrets is referred to as a business. (Experienced owners prefer the term 'rabble')

The young are called kits.

The adults are roughly 20 inches long including a 5 inch tail with hobs usually being noticeably bigger than jills. Behaviour and personality varies greatly between individuals but as a general guide hobs tend to be more laid back and jills seem to be on the go the more of the time. They have an average lifespan of 8 - 10 years but spend a large percentage of this life asleep (about 18 hours per day) as they are crepuscular, which means they are most active during dawn and dusk.

A lot of the reputation ferrets have for being vicious, smelly little critters is undeserved. A well fed, cared for and regularly handled ferret has no reason to bite anybody, there are no bad ferrets only bad owners.

Their requirements are simple: A clean living area, comfy bed to sleep in and fresh food and water. Plus, lots of cuddles and playtime with their humans in the few hours a day they are not sleeping.

Ferrets are very inquisitive and playful bundles of fur and will happily rummage in whatever they can find, play and fight with each other and take a keen interest in whatever the humans are up to.

They are very social animals, preferring to live in pairs or small groups so they are good company for each other when you are not home.
